The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) was created in April 2001 to implement the Nigerian Information Technology Policy and coordinate general Information Technology (IT) development in the country. NITDA Act, 2007 mandates the Agency to create a framework for the planning, research, development, standardisation, application, coordination, monitoring, evaluation, and regulation of IT practices, activities and systems in Nigeria. The primary role of the Agency is to develop, regulate and advise on practices of IT through regulatory standards, guidelines and policies. The Agency also clears all IT projects and infrastructural development in the country. NITDA has two subsidiaries; Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI), which supports startup growth, and the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), which focuses on R&D in emerging technologies. The Agency’s strategic priorities are centred around: Fostering digital literacy and cultivating talents; Building a robust technology research ecosystem; Strengthening policy implementation and legal framework; Promoting inclusive access to digital infrastructure and services; Strengthening cybersecurity and enhancing digital trust; Nurturing an innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem; Forging strategic partnerships and collaboration; Cultivating a vibrant organisational culture and an agile workforce in NITDA.
